FERROUS METALS

Since their discovery, ferrous metals have become highly significant in mechanical construction. The most important ferrous metals are steel—a durable material with excellent properties and ease of use—and cast iron, a widely utilized material in mechanical construction. Cast iron can often replace steel in various applications, frequently offering significant advantages, though it does not possess the same level of strength.

These metals are alloys of iron and carbon, which may also contain elements such as phosphorus, manganese, silicon, copper, and sulfur, among others. Technically, they consist of over 90% iron, hence the name “ferrous metals,” with a maximum carbon content of 5%. The other elements appear in relatively small proportions.

Due to their ease of processing, these materials are predominantly used in the production of machines, tools, structures, and installations that require highly resistant materials.
